Z: 제주는 한반도의 최남단 섬이다. 하지만 또한 태평양을 향한 최전방의 섬이기도 하다.
Z: Jeju is the southernmost island of the Korean Peninsula.
But it is also the island on the front line toward the Pacific Ocean.

A: 지리적 잇점이 있다고 본다. 직항들이 연결된다면.
A: I think it has a geographical advantage.  If direct flights are connected.

Z: 제주에 레이더 기지가 있는 것을 알고 있는가?
Z: Do you know that there is a radar facility in Jeju?

A: 잘 모르겠다. 생소하다.  A: I don't know. It sounds not familiar.

Z: 사람과 상품의 운송을 위한 하늘길과 바다길의 연결도 중요하지만,
공역을 잘 모니터링하는 것도 중요하다. 국가 안보와 직결되기 때문이다.
Z: The connection between the skyway and the sea route for the transportation of people and goods is important, but also It is important to monitor the airspace well.
This is because it is directly related to national security.

A: 레이더기지가 하늘 공역의 관제를 담보하기 마련이다.
A: Radar bases are engaged into guarantee control of the sky way and airspace.

Z: 국토교통부가 레이더를 이달부터 제주에서 운영하고 있다. 일명 ‘한라 레이더’.
제주 남단 공역에서 비행하는 국내외 항공기의 안전한 관제를 담보하게 된다.
Z: The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has been operating this radar in Jeju since December 2023.  The so-called "Halla Radar."
It will ensure safe control of domestic and foreign aircraft flying in Jeju's southern airspace.

A: 일종의 항공과 관련된 인프라 시설이군요. 언제부터 추진되어 온 사업인가요?
A: It's a kind of aviation-related infrastructure facility.  Since when has it been promoted?

Z: 2021년 1월부터 진행되어왔고, 2023년 11월 준공되었다. 사업비는 총 176억원이 투입되었다.
Z: It has been in progress since January 2021, and it was completed in November 2023.
A total of 17.6 million USD was invested in the project.

A: 이 레이더는 어디에 위치해 있죠?  A: Where is this radar located?

Z: 하늘길을 잘 관제해야하기 때문에 한라산에 위치해 있다.
한라산 해발 1100미터 고지대에 들어서 있다.
사실 그전에도 레이더 시설은 있었다. 2009년 1월부터 운영해왔던 동광 레이더가 있다.
이 시설을 대체하는 시설이 한라레이더이다.
Z: It is located in Hallasan Mountain. It should be located at the higher position because the sky road needs to be controlled well.
It is located at an altitude of 1,100 meters above sea level of Hallasan Mountain.
In fact, there was the old radar facility before that.
There is Donggwang radar that has been in operation since January 2009.
Halla Radar is a facility that replaces this facility.
A: 제주 남단 공역은 많은 비행기들이 날아다닐 것으로 예상된다.
제주를 이어주는 직항 뿐 아니라 인근 국가들 간 연결되는 항공기들도 많을 것이다.
A: Many airplanes are expected to fly in the airspace at the southern end of Jeju.
There will be many aircraft connecting neighboring countries as well as direct flights connecting Jeju.

Z: 제주 남단 공역은 매우 중요한 지역이다.
대한민국과 동남아/중국/일본, 중국과 일본을 오가는 비행기들이 지속적으로 증가하고 있다.
일일평균 970편이라고 보면 된다.
항공기들이 교차하는 지점이기 때문에 항공기들의 안전한 관제를 위한 통신이 매우 중요한 지점이다.
Z: Jeju's southern airspace is a very important area.
The number of flights between South Korea and Southeast Asia/China/Japan, China and Japan is constantly increasing.
It is an average of 970 flights per day.
Since it is the point where aircraft intersect, communication for safe control of aircraft is a very important point.

A: 한라레이더는 기존의 동광레이더보다 한층 더 업그레이드 된 시설이라고 봐도 되는가요?
A: Can I say that Halla Radar is a more upgraded facility than Donggwang Radar?

Z: 기존의 동광레이더는 위치가 안좋았다. 해발 347미터 지점에 위치해 있었다.
음성통신시설 도달거리가 멀고 낮은 지대에서 탐지에 어려움이 있었다.
지국의 곡률에 의한 먼거리는 탐지가 어려운 것이다.
Z: The old Donggwang radar was in a bad position. It was located 347 meters above sea level.
It was difficult to detect in areas where the distance of sound communication facilities was far and low.
The distance caused by the curvature of the Earth is difficult to detect.

A: 그래서 이번에 새로운 레이더를 건설하게 된 거군요. 그것도 한라산 높은 고지대에.
A: That's why it has been built a new radar this time.
That's also on the high ground of Hallasan Mountain.

Z: 그렇다. 국토부가 최신 기술을 적용해서 다양한 기능을 탑재한 레이더를 개발하고 고지대에 설치했다.  자체 고도 탐지 기능과 최신 기술을 적용했다. 우리나라 최남단까지 양호한 탐지 성능을 제공할 수 있는 시설이다.
Z: That's right. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport applied the latest technology to develop radars equipped with various functions and installed them on high ground.
It applied its own altitude detection function and the latest technology.
It is a facility that can provide good detection performance to the southernmost part of Korea.

A: 앞으로 제주도 남단을 날아다니는 비행기들의 안전을 책임져줄 것으로 기대된다.
A: It is expected that they will be responsible for the safety of the planes flying in the southern end of Jeju Island in the future.

Z: 국토부는 한라 레이더를 통해서 제주남단 공역을 날아다니는 항공기에 대한 모니터링을 강화할 예정이다. 항공 안전도도 크게 높아질 것이다.
Z: The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will strengthen monitoring of aircraft flying in the southern airspace of Jeju through the Halla Radar.
Aviation safety will also be greatly enhanced.
